We’re running with Team Exercise Your Rights to help build sustainable, inclusive, and equitable communities.

About a year ago, we decided to start running together to hold each other accountable. Just like we’re able to find just about any justification for why we can’t get out of bed for a morning run, affordable housing seems to fall lower and lower on Baltimore’s priority list—unless we hold our leaders accountable.

At a time when our city was in desperate need of affordable housing—with over 75,000 families competing for housing vouchers, and nearly half of our residents housing cost-burdened--our leaders weren’t making the most needed investments to support our communities. Through the 20/20 Vision for Fair Development, United Workers shifted the agenda to create a new standard for equitable development that includes all of us. Over the past two years they have led tireless efforts to pass a ballot initiative that created the Affordable Housing Trust Fund and win support from our Mayor and City Council for $20 million to fund it.

When we first started running on our own, we’d give up after a mile or two, thinking we couldn’t do it. But running together, we’ve been able to push each other to go further and further. We can all do more when we surround ourselves with a supportive community. People power has built the success of the 20/20 Vision for Fair Development, and with your support, we can build a Community Land Trust that will create community-controlled, permanently affordable housing.

We can’t wait on our city leaders to take action, we have to be the trailblazers moving forward our own solutions. It takes stamina, but we hope you will help us keep up this important work.
