Taxpayer's Night- Save Filbert St Garden (May 29,2019)

Students from across Baltimore launched the "Zero Waste Challenge" -- a call to action for all of us to demand that our basic human rights: permanently affordable housing, control of development in our communities, and our right to breathe clean air be met.

Right now, the Filbert Street Community Garden - a living example of Fair Development and Zero Waste - is under threat by the Department of Public Works Director Rudy Chow. We have been working in good  faith for months with DPW to gain community ownership of the garden using our South Baltimore Community Land Trust. Unfortunately, DPW has not stepped up yet with a concrete commitment and a timeline. Earlier this month, residents issued DPW Director Chow a deadline to commit to saving the Garden - a deadline that comes due on May 29th at City Council Tax Payers' Night.
The garden is a real-life example of what our city could be if we invest in 'true' alternatives to incineration. The garden is the home to the only youth-led composting business in Baltimore, a thriving bee keeping operation, goats, chickens, etc. It is a true embodiment of the 'Zero Waste Challenge' and this is why we are fighting so hard to save it. The community spent over a decade transforming the garden from a vacant lot to an community space dedicated to ensuring the sustainability and viability of our community.

That's why we're inviting you to be a part of fighting to save the land and all the incredible work that will be lost if the garden is destroyed. On May 29th, we hope you can join us at City Hall 100 North Holiday in Du Burns Council Chamber (4th floor) at 4:30pm!
