Frontline communities in South Baltimore and across the city have drafted, in partnership with Zero Waste national experts, a Fair Development Plan for Zero Waste that will provide a near term plan to help close and move past the BRESCO incinerator, expand waste collections including public investment in cleaning up our vacant lands and illegal dumping sites, and create hundreds of local living wage jobs.
This initiative aims to address Baltimore city's worst air polluter - the trash burning incinerator. We can build on the momentum of environmental breakthroughs - the passage of the Clean Air Act that the incinerator says it can't comply with, the recent plastic bag ban victory - to now finally push for a racially and economically just Zero Waste Plan to transform not only our air quality but lift up human rights values to ensure Black and poor communities currently and historically burdened with the ill effects of our waste system are a priority. It is time to urgently address climate change and the very real crisis of air pollution and waste our city has contended with for too long.
